When I first started in the operating room, I had heard of surgical techs, but I didn’t know what their job actually involved. But, it only took me about 2 seconds to realize that scrub techs were a wealth of knowledge and experience, and if I was going to succeed in the OR, I was going to have to learn everything I could from them. Thankfully, I worked with several who were more than willing to share their knowledge! Their willingness and patience with me while I was learning is something I will always be thankful for.

To all of the scrub techs out there – THANK YOU! You spend most of your day on your feet, standing in blood and other body fluids, passing instruments and lifting heavy trays, sweating underneath lead and sterile gowns, and keeping the mayo and back table running so smoothly that your surgeons don’t even have to ask for what they need. You’re ready, you anticipate, you know the steps to so many different surgeries, and you know the names of thousands of instruments – both the real ones and the made up ones! You make it look easy, but we all know it’s not. You deserve the celebration this week!
