Lies, Half-Truths, and Other Misleading Things

Let’s be honest. We hear some really misleading things on a daily basis. You might even call them outlandish. Most of them just make us roll our eyes and move on. Some give us a good laugh. And then there are those statements that we hear that make us immediately think, “Um, yeah, no – that’s not true.”

We’ve all heard them, and we all know them. These different lies, half-truths, or misleading things are so common, in fact, that maybe we should just include them in orientation so new employees know what to expect and don’t naively believe them in the beginning. And it’s not just from surgeons, although we hear a lot of crazy stuff from them! Our patients and our co-workers do a great job of saying crazy things on a regular basis as well.

I’ve collected my Top 10 Lies, Half-Truths, and Misleading Things and put them in today’s list. See how many of them you can relate to.

#10. I have no idea how that got in there.

Patient lies about why light bulb is in their rectum

Really? You fell, fully clothed onto that light bulb, yet it somehow ended up inside you? Fascinating.

#9. Estimated Blood Loss?

Wrong estimate of blood loss in surgery

Just because we say “estimate” does not mean that you can lie.

#8. This case will only take 30 minutes.

misleading things we hear every day

#7. Let me borrow your pen. I’ll give it right back.

misleading things let me borrow your pen

Oh no you don’t…I don’t care who you are, I’m keeping my favorite pen. And if you do pick it up and use it, I’ll track you down if you walk off with it. If you’d like to get your own favorite pens, click here – then you can love your pens as much as I do!

#6. I’m going to take all my cases to another hospital!

That’s temper-tantrum speak for “I’m not getting my way, so I’m going to take my toys and go home.” And since you’re acting like a child, we’re just going to roll our eyes and walk off.

#5. I’ll be finished on time today.

misleading things cases will be finished on time

Whether you’re telling your significant other that you’ll be getting off work on time, or it’s your surgeon declaring that his cases will all go off without a hitch, it doesn’t matter. Everything has now been jinxed. It won’t happen. Everyone will be late.

#4. I’m on my way.

We hear this from surgeons, vendors, coworkers who are running late…take your pick. Generally, I’d like to just to know where you’re coming from. Your house? The hospital down the street? And are you actually heading my way, or are you finishing something else up then you’re headed my way? There’s a big difference!

#3. I’m sick. *cough*

not buying it when coworkers call in sick

Everyone gets sick. We’re human. But, there a few people that we work with who always seem to be more sick than others. And they are always the sickest when it’s really busy, it’s the day after a holiday, or they’re scheduled to work late. Sometimes the excuses just don’t add up, and sometimes they forget that we’re all friends on social media and we all see what they’re really doing.

#2. I’m walking in the door.

surgeon says he's walking in the door but he's not really there yet

You know, if I can’t roll back to the O.R. unless you’re in the building, there’s no way I’m rolling back until I see the whites of your eyes. I’ve been burned before when a surgeon lied and said he was in the building, then he had to call back and admit he lied because he was stuck in traffic.

#1. I always do things the same way.

Surgeon says he always does things the same way, but he doesn't

Yeah…no

These are my top 10 lies, half-truths, and other misleading things

We hear some, if not all of them, every single day. What other things do you hear every day? Share them in the comments!
